A tower nearly as tall as the Empire State Building in New York has been given planning permission by city authorities.

The 363m-high building is planned for the heart of Manhattan and was approved yesterday despite fierce opposition from the owner of the Empire State, property firm Malkin Holdings.

Owner Anthony Malkin said he was against the new building, which is just 18m short of the Empire State, because it would ruin the city’s skyline.

Designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli, the proposed glass building will be built two blocks away from its more famous neighbour and Malkin said it should be shrunk so as not to obscure views of his building.

But city planners voted 47-1 in favour of the tower which is being developed by Vornado Realty Trust. The firm said it would not go forward with construction work on the $3 billion tower until a major tenant is found.
