notes

Named for Nicholas Murray Butler, Columbia College's President from 1902 to 1945, this structure replaced Low Library as Columbia's main library. Its monumental Ionic colonnade and multi-story windows refer to Roman models. This is surprising work from' the chief architect of Yale University's Gothic Revival Campus.
