Manhattan Mall
is a shopping mall A shopping mall is a building or set of buildings that contain stores/shops and have interconnecting walkways that make it easy for people to walk from store to store. The walkways may or may not be enclosed. In the United Kingdom and Australia these are called "shopping centres" or "shopping arcades". Herald Square is formed by the intersection of Broadway, Sixth Avenue (officially named Avenue of the Americas) and 34th Street in New York City. The area is a retail hub. The most notable attraction is Macy's department store. "New York, New York" redirects here. For alternate meanings, see New York, New York (disambiguation). New York — officially named City of New York and often called New York City to distinguish it from the state of New York, in which it is located — is the most populous city in the United States, and the second most populous in North America after Mexico City. New York City is known affectionately as the "Big Apple" and recognized as one of several "world cities". Giving some credence to the city's self-designation as "capital of the world", the United Nations headquarters is located in New York. The mall was once a bustling shopping attraction. Its most recent anchor store was Stern's Stern's was a department store serving the states of New York and New Jersey. It is now defunct. Chronology1867: Stern's Brothers was founded in Manhattan. 1951: It was acquired by Allied Stores Corporation. 1986: Campeau Corporation acquired Allied. 1988: Campeau acquied Federated Department Stores (FDS). Beginning of Allied/FDS "tandem" operations. 1992: Allied fully merged into FDS. 2001: FDS closes its Stern's division, with most locations being converted to Bloomingdale's or Macy's stores. The flagship Stern's store at Manhattan Mall, just two blocks from the Macy's flagship store, was not converted and is currently empty. There are a number of classes of department store, discount stores, such as Kmart, Wal-Mart or Target were sometimes called junior department stores in contrast with more full-fledged stores like Sears or Macy's. But when Federated Department Stores Federated Department Stores operates 465 department stores in 34 U.S. states, Guam and Puerto Rico, under the following names: Bloomingdale's - 34 stores in California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia Bon-Macy's - 50 stores in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming Burdines-Macy's - 56 stores, all in Florida converted its Stern's locations into Macy's Macy's, founded on the corner of 14th Street and 6th Avenue in New York City as R.H. Macy & Company in 1858, later moved to 18th Street and Broadway on the "Ladies' Mile," the 19th century's elite shopping district, where it remained for nearly 40 years. The flagship store moved uptown to Herald Square at 34th Street and Broadway in 1902. Beginning with one building, and through expanded, the Manhattan Mall store was closed, as it was only two blocks from the word famous Macy's flagship A flagship is the ship used by the commanding officer of a group of naval ships. The term originates from the custom of the commanding officer (usually, but not always, an admiral) to fly a distinguishing flag. Used in this way, "flagship" is fundamentally a temporary designation; the flagship is wherever the admiral is flying his flag. However, admirals have always needed additional facilities; a meeting room large enough to hold all the captains of the fleet, and a place for the admiral's staff to make plans and draw up orders. The mall is currently a very popular destination with many upmarket shops. Prior anchor stores include Gimbel's and Abraham & Straus (A&S). |
