A fanciful corner oriel worthy of the 16th-century French Renaissance
guards this corner, all crowned with a slated and finialed roof. This
special place (mansion to the locals) and its neighbors at Nos. 23-27
were built by Valk for investor Charles Pied, a rare and rich group to
be so well preserved. |

Plane
crash: In the morning mist of December 16, 1960, two airliners collided
over Staten Island. The pilot of one attempted an emergency landing in
Prospect Park but made it only to the intersection of 7th Avenue and
Sterling Place. The plane sliced the cornice off a small apartment
building west of 7th Avenue (the light colored brick marks the spot) and
came to a rest with its nose on the doorstep of the old Ward Mansion. A
church on Sterling Place was destroyed by the resulting fire, but
miraculously the mansion was untouched. |
