In 1908, they moved into the 49 East 65th Street townhouse (adjoining Sara's home at 47 East 65th Street) SDR had built for the couple as a Christmas present. This remained the Roosevelt base in New York City until SDR's death in 1941.  FDR then sold the house to Hunter College.  http://www2.gwu.edu/~erpapers/abouteleanor/index.html

University Will Renovate FDR House
The Manhattan townhouse where newlyweds Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt lived from 1908 until 1933 will become a public-policy institute, the City University of New York announced last month.

Last used as a student center, the 1906 building on the Upper East Side has been empty for 11 years.

Hunter College, the largest college of the City University of New York, owned the six-story building from 1943 until 1997. A private foundation returned the townhouse to the university last year.

The university will use bond money for most of the $20 million project and will raise the remaining funds from private donors, according to Terri Rosen Deutsch, Hunter College spokeswoman.

In September, the university will begin designing the new Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at 49 East 65th Street. Construction will begin in September 2004 and is expected to last up to three years.  http://www.nationaltrust.org/magazine/
