notes |
Built as a bank, this opulent terra-cotta monument is now a cathedral, the reverse of the common progression from religious to sectarian use; compare the various churches of Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill that are now condominiums. The architecture is the natural result of the World's Columbian Exhibition (1893), the inspiration for the American Renaissance. |
