Eliot
Feld, director of the Feld Ballet, conceived of the Joyce Theater in the
late 1970s. At that time, the only workable New York venues for dance were
either high-rent, full-size theatrical venues or awkwardly configured
downtown lofts. The old Elgin Theater, a former Eighth Avenue art-film
house, offered a unique compromise between these two extremes. The facility
was purchased, given a $3.5 million renovation and opened as the Joyce
Theater in 1982. Since then it has emerged as one of the nation's foremost
venues for dance.
One typical Joyce season might feature 25 modern, ballet and ethnic dance troupes presenting dozens of premieres in addition to repertory works. Companies appearing since the Theater's opening include the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, Japan's Takarazuka Dance Company, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, Pilobolus, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Lyon Opera Ballet, the American Indian Dance Theater, Ballet Hispanico, Lucinda Childs Dance Company, Classical Dance Company of Cambodia, and the companies of Merce Cunningham and Laura Dean. The Art Moderne building was originally constructed in 1942 after a design by Simon Zelnik. The early 1980s renovation was designed by Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates. Audiences have widely praised the new 472-seat theater for its intimate and comfortable spaces. The Joyce education program serves some 5,000 city school children a year with free performances by some of the nation's finest dance companies.
